Healthy Community Program

It is a recognized program within Special Olympics that works to increase access to quality health care and effective prevention programming to improve the health of people with intellectual disabilities.

In addition to raising awareness about health disparities facing people with intellectual disabilities, Healthy Communities activates public and private sector partners to adopt more inclusive practices, train and empower athletes and caregivers to become vocal advocates, and ultimately make it possible for people with intellectual disabilities to live healthy lives in their own communities.

This program is designed to improve the health and well-being of individuals with intellectual disabilities by providing access to quality health care, education, and resources.

The program focuses on several key areas, including health screenings, education and training for health care providers, and advocacy for policy changes that promote the health of individuals with intellectual disabilities.

In Special Olympics, a "healthy community" is a model program that aims to address the significant health disparities faced by individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID).
It goes beyond simply providing sports opportunities and focuses on creating a holistic approach to health and well-being.

By creating healthy communities, Special Olympics is not only transforming the lives of athletes but also creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
